Lady Gaga Venus
The inspiration behind the ARTPOP cover:
- “The Birth Of Venus" by Botticelli: The goddess of Love, emerged from the sea as a fully grown woman, arriving at the sea-shore.
- “Apollo and Daphne" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini: The battle between chastity (Daphne) and sexual desires (Apollo), and how Daphne had to sacrifice her body and become a laurel tree, which can be seen as an act of eternal chastity. Apollo crafted himself a wreath out of her laurel branches, turning her symbol of purity into a cultural symbol for him and other poets and musicians.
- “The Gazing Ball" by Jeff Koons: Gazing into one of these balls, you see yourself and your environment curving around to center on you, the globe reduces everything - the entire world, potentially - to a backdrop highlited by your solitary presence. You’re the subject and so there is no need to recall the significance of Art.
